[Milsurplus] DU & DW Differences

I have a mint DU-2 and the carcasses of 3 DW loops as well as manuals for
both........as Jay (KE6PPF) said, the only difference is the tube that
connects the loop antenna to the control unit. The DU loop is mounted
directly to the azimuth scale on top of the control and, to use the manual's
words:

"This equipment is intended for installation on open cockpit types of Naval
aircraft, such as scouting and observation planes, where all operating
controls must be accessible to the pilot and observer".

The DW-1 manual states:

"This equipment is intended for installation on the larger types of Naval
aircraft, such as patrol and transport planes, where the loop may be plugged
into a shaft which extends directly up through the skin of the ship from the
direction finder coupling unit in the radio compartment." With the long
support tube, the DW also uses a bearing at the point where it goes through
the aircraft skin as well as a handwheel (for rotating the loop) just above
the azimuth scale on the coupling unit.

Regards to all,

Tom
