Rod,

Gates also used the 2D21 as part of the cue trigger or timer in their 
tube series
cart machines from the early 1960s.  I don't have a Gates catalog handy to
verify the model.

IIRC, the 2D21 was used to block the tone cue system upon cart start, so the
cart did not stop on the cue tone at the beginning of a cart cut.
