Hue,
I have the Federal Telegraph and Radio FT-102 console which was also used
o/b Victory and Liberty ships (Federal was the other contractor for the US
Maritime Commission, besides RMCA). The HF part of the console contains the
Mackay 167-BY transmitter and the receiver "cubbyhole". My specimen has the
original RMCA AR-8506B receiver in it. The manual refers to the Scott SLR-F
as the alternate receiver. The AR-8506 has a lower but wider front panel
than the SLR-F. Filler plates are provided (mine had the 2 fillers for the
SLR-F in a small package inside the cabinet as the single horizontal filler
is mounted with the AR-8506B) with the console to accommodate either
receiver and set up the cubbyhole opening to fit either receiver. Both
receivers are AC/DC and very similar in circuitry. The FT-102 also specifies
a separate doublet for the receiver. BTW no T/R antenna switching is
provided.
I use my FT-102 console regularly on the air, presently I'm using a coax
switch for manual antenna T/R switching, but I'm going to hook up an antenna
relay in the keying circuit of the Mackay transmitter. The RMCA AR-8506B is
amazingly sensitive and stable. The front end is fairly robust and seems not
to overload with strong signals. Selectivity has a lot to be desired with
the IF frequency of 1700 KHz, but a good audio filter in the output helps a
lot when the band is very crowded. Most of the time however I don't even
bother using the filter. The rated output of the transmitter is 200W, I
measure up to 350W out.

I see that the RMCA manual for the 4U radio unit, installed on Liberty
and Victory ships, could have the Scott SLR-R installed instead of the
AR-8506 receiver. It's no surprise that the manual only shows the overall
hookup and no further details on the Scott receiver. I don't know if they
both fit the same cutout in the radio bay; i thought they were different
sized receivers. The caption on the hookup diagram says, "MODEL 4U
RADIO UNIT with USMG furnished SLR-F receiver". I don't know what
"USMG" is. BTW, the hookup diagram calls for a doublet (dipole) receiving
antenna for the HF receiver. I would have thought that would limit best
reception on multiple bands, but maybe good enuff. -Hue Miller
