PRC74 carrying frame
Each Soldier was issued a large Alice pack and frame,
The PRC74 was carried in the top inside pocket of that pack usually
in a water proof bag. This pocket was designed for carrying radios
and had a strap to hold the radio in place during movement and
parachuting.
During a hasty contact halt the A-team would put out a 360 degree
perimeter, the radio operator would open the top flap of the large
alice pack and begin to prep the radio and GRA-71 for the next
contact period at the same time supervising another team member in
construction of the antenna. At the same time the team leader would
prep the message. So unless they had to break out the hand crank
generator it could all be done without taking the radio out of the
ruck sack. But of course the GRA-71 would need to be removed from
were ever it was stored to get it close enough to the radio for a
connection as the cables weren't very long.
