Al, A couple of years or so ago I asked this
question on antennas at mailman.qth.net, and there
were some replies after a while.  These antennas
were popular in the Africa Corps.  There are a
few pictures with General Romell with some of
his command vehicles.  There were open top
vehicles which carried the communication center,
and they had the square antenna.  The picture
you refereed to shows more supports on that
tank than the trucks had.  I think it was a
loop.  It appears that one end is grounded to
the vehicle while the other end goes to the
antenna tuner.  Let us know what you find.
