In my experience with USAF radio equipment
the operators and/or maintenance men who were
technically inclined did have a closer
relationship to the radio equipment. To others
it was just a "Push-To-Talk" (tm) environment.
We always had some "Hams" around, and they often
made equipment do what it was never intended to
do. Such as doubling in the final of the BC-610
to work 10 meters. Or building a Tri-Tet type
oscillator inside a BC-610 tuning unit. Or
putting fans on the outside of the BC-191. Or
building AC supplies for BC-312 and BC-348. All
this was in the 1947 time frame.
Fun Time back then.
