I'm not 100% sure, but I think it mated with an identical flange, having a
choke ring, and the two parts were held together with a small band clamp. The
band clamps have a cross section like:

and are typically made of steel or stainless with a single radial cut and
captive screw-nut to provide a compressive hoop stress. Larger versions are
used to hold the tops on hermetic sealed shipping cans and giant versions
hold the tops on 55 gallon drums.
If the WG is pressurized, there is typically an O-ring groove cut into the
flange face or the O-ring is placed into the choke groove.
You might want to look in the MIT Rad. Lab books for further information.
