Why were they wasting resources making the grossly obsolete SCR-178/179
sets in WWII, mo st of which have 1942 contract dates? A set like the
SCR-288 would have well ou tperformed these dinosaurs, at about
one-third the weight and likely at lower cost.

My hand's up!

Probably Ft. Monmouth Chuck sed the answer was Chindits

These were the flunkies who supplied labor to Gen'l Stilwell during
building of Burma Rd. They were supplied with these jurassic SCR-178
things for camps to stay in touch. And they succeeded (see book
"Vinegar Joe")

So comes WW2 & what to do? There's tooling to make BC-188s, etc. Prob-
ably @ Cardwell & it's turned over to Allen B. Dumont on that '42 contract.
Conjectured Sig-Corps thot was "it worked OK once, will it do again?"

I 'adapted' mine for pi-net output fm it's 865. Write me & I'll tell you
where on the web u can hear a OH-GA qso involving it. Fella that sold
it to me sed you're the world's only guy who'd want a Indiana Jones
2-way. Still see him!
