Ah Time to check in here,
I keep hearing folks talking about external vfos for the BC-610, seems a bit
strange. First I have found from much operating in both CW and AM modes
that the tuning units are quite stable IF the transmitter, has a stable mains
source, at the rated voltage for the model in question. Also if the tuning units
have not been butchered in any way, and if the transmitter proper, is operated
consistent with the manual.
I run my BC-610s using crystal control in some cases, but not usually and
never have any complaints about frequency stability. Especially on CW mode
folks say if I had not told them, they would not have believed I was using a
BC-610(*) for transmit.
Bottom line there is use it like the manual says and it works, NOT just well
enough, but as specified, they were used in Battalion and Division HF radio
nets, lighten up.
Lastly, if you don't like the M.O. tuner alone, for whatever reason, get your
hands on an o-39 FSK RF generator to the transmitter, they are extremely
stable and cover the 80 -20 range with the transmitter. Again however if you
read and understand the manual for the unit you will note that the output
range will allow you to use the "pair" from 80 - 20 meters contiguous. My
favorite demonstration is to tune the rig to RTTY on 20 meters, with full
output into a dummy load, tune a "stable receiver to the frequency, and then take
a rubber mallet and bang the chassis of the O-39, result, no warble and no
drift.
Or you can do it the "urban Myth" way and drift up and down the band! YMMV!
"Weak AC mains, make for a bad sounding BC-610(*)! FWIW
