Hue,

You forget that some hams are professionals or as good as professionals if 
their actual profession is unrelated to military radio.  Not all are hackers, 
although a visit to any flea-market will usually lead anyone to believe 
otherwise.

There was in fact a late 50's or early 60's variant of the T-17-on-steroids 
made that looked somewhat like what you described.  But it did not have a 
chrome-vinyl cord.  Tthe T-17-B which is what I think you said this one was marked 
as was built by Shure in 1943 and 1944.  The only example of the late variant 
with the large ventilated retaining ring that I've ever seen was in such poor 
condition that I was unable to read all of the nomenclature, but it was 
M-something.
