Was there recently a thread here on this receiver, a
modification and renomenclaturing of the BC-348 ?
If there was, i seem to have thoroughly deleted all
traces of it, and wonder if i was dreaming.
The receiver, which i recently bought, at first looks like
a kludge, with its large connector coming of the left front
panel and the differently-colored small box attached to the
receiver top surface, having squelch and noise controls.
It probably contains miniature sized tubes.
The fellow i bought it from said he thought airfield usage.
I thought likely; but Brad Whiting searched on the web
and found "R-589 / MRC-20" for Forward Air Controller
jeep. Note, R-589 in the online listing but the receiver i
have is nomenclatured R-584. MRC-20 consisting of R-584
+ART-13A + ARC-27 + ARC-55, or as Brad pointed out,
"about 600 lbs. of radios". I wondered why a FAC would
need HF, but then i thought, maybe just insurance, better
to have than not have. BTW, this particular example was
originally a BC-348-Q. It has an AC supply in it; i thought
oh darn, modified by ham. Brad pointed out that the PS
looks much neater than the ham added supplies, i noticed
the supply uses bathtub oil caps and not lytics, maybe
another sign of a real production AC PS, but of course no
idea when or where this was added. -Hue Miller
