As a boy Scout during that era, I had a visit to Pease AFB up in NH. 
I asked a flyboy what he thought of the rescue sets. He said "Not 
very much." It seems that the jerk of the parachute opening put such 
a stress on the vest pockets holding the radio and mercury battery, 
that they ripped right through the vest and kept right on going.
