I have been shipping stuff by FedX and it has been faster and way less then UPS, now that I have said this certain it will change. Also have shipped stupid big things by RPS/Roadway. They have a terminal here in town and if you take it to the terminal and have it sent to another terminal it not that bad, its when you want door to door service it cost about ten times as much and they have pallets and shrinkwrap at the terminal and never charged me for using their stuff so you take the item their, put it on a pallet , shrink wrap  and it goes with no problems about weight or size.
