When aboard BB-59 MASSACHUSETTS and other venues I usually describe what the Radioman did as "Wireless E-mail", and the Radioman himself as a "human modem".  People under the age of 40 really like a manual typewriter.  You do have to make sure that people don't just smash down a bunch of keys, and I only use $10 flea-market specials for hands-on.

The beacon ID game is fun and I have done that successfully with spouses and middle-school age kids when I have radio functions at home.
