[Milsurplus] Arc-5 not so) Mobile

For my boat, I have bought Optima Group 31
Marine combination starting/deep-cycle batteries.
Not cheap, but lots of capacity and reliability.
About $260 with sales tax here in Oklahoma.

They are totally sealed batteries and can take
a lot of abuse and come back. They should
pretty much avoid problems with out-gassing
of hydrogen!

They sure are heavy, though.

It's always a good idea to use a battery box!
They are really quite inexpensive and I think
you can probably even find them at Wal-Mart.

If you want to go the battery route (necessary IMO
for big dynos) you might try going to a boating supply
store. They have very nice plastic battery cases,
batteries designed for deep cycle use, and terminals
with wing nuts. First, you will need to secure a line of
credit on your house though, as the stuff is expensive.

I picked up a pair of 100 Ah gel cells last year
free at a place that cycles them out of comm
equipment on a regular schedule whether they
need it or not. They pay by the pound to get
rid of them. I recycle them when they conk out.

These 2 in parallel run the solid-state gear and
LED task lighting in my shack 24/7 and I occasionally
use them to run my BC-312 when I get the
"authenticity itch." Still figuring out a "starter
cap" lash-up so I can use a conventional linear
PSU w/o it locking down.
