The capacitors that have been refered to here are available at
most any car audio shop.  They use them to beef up 12V systems
for very large car amplifiers.  You can get them up to 3 Farad or so.
Some even have LCD meters on them to monitor voltage, pretty
impressive.  Remember, they pack a whallop and pull gobs of current
to charge them up unless you limit charging current first.

I converted a lot of ARC-5 stuff years ago, did the 12V Conversion
on TX, not all that hard.

Oh, on batteries, if you go that route, use the -sealed- gel cells,
we got a couple of 38AH cells used in alarm systems a while back
on sale for $22/each, make nice emergency backup source.  Big
but still small enough to be lifted up and moved around.
