All: Enough mudslinging.
I don't think there's a state in this Union that can claim with any
authority to be any closer to Almighty God than the other states. That
being the case, it's not obvious to me that there's much room for pride from
anyone, over anything.
With regard to the finances: I don't think there's a state in this union
that can simultaneously feed, clothe, shelter, and defend its citizens from
the full spread of natural and man-made events that can occur from all
possible directions (up to and including an NBC strike from a foreign
country). If there were one ANYWHERE that was that well-fixed, and was so
prepared to be a nation on its own, the rest of us would be moving there.
Since there isn't such a state anywhere in this Union, then any bullcrap
about "my state's better than yours" is properly left to the septic tank of
history. We need each other more now than ever before.
Neither the South, nor Massachusetts, nor any other location deserves to be
criticized just because of what some of their folks have done. Those folks
deserve criticism, though. I met one just a few minutes ago while looking
in the mirror. I bet if you get honest with the person you see in the
mirror tomorrow, you'll agree with him or her that you probably deserve it
also. That being the case, where's the justification for verbally abusing
someone else, or trying to make them feel small?
Here's an unhappy thought: What would a civil war that was also a cold war
look like? Would it look a lot like what we do today in our politics, and
in our treatment of each other as evidenced by the exchanges related to this
topic? If that's the case, is it time to rethink? Or do we continue in our
self-righteousness until we take it beyond being a cold war?
