Clete,
I think all of your postulates(?) have merit (from what I have read
and gleaned from what pubs I have perused).I think the switchboards
BD-71 and -72 had two circuits for telegraph.Sadly I sold the very nice
TG-5 (had wrong key,but close) before I started my field wire comms
collection.Now looking...
There is a series of booklets from the Signal Corps Training
Center,Camp Crowder,Missouri that are very useful to the collector of
this gear. They are pocket sized in orange covers so should be easy to
find in piles of pubs at fleas and swaps.I do not know how many there
are but I have "Basic Wire Communication","Field Switchboard
Installation", and "Switchboard Operation and Substation Installation".
I never knew how much fun telephones could be until I got my first
pair of EE-8's!I even sent a pair to my brother in N.J. so the kids
(whose parents are active military vehicle collectors/restorers) would
have something they could easily deploy and connect and have fun with.
Also seeking a pair of Linesman's pliers at a reasonable price. Can't
think of the number as I am about to fall head first into the sack.
4:30 AM comes all to soon in this house!
Jay

Language with "Q" and similiar signals for one.
A key is quieter than a phone. Signal easily
interfaced with telegraph carrier systems. They
could be DC multiplexed (phantom circuits)
easier than could voice. And so on. Or, maybe
they had more of them. Maybe less expensive?
