We have a local shark that I have a love/hate relationship with. He
cruises estate sales, passing out a few bucks here and there for the old
gear that the relatives are getting rid of. It then ends up in his
antique/junque shop where he places exorbitant price tags on it. Stuff
will sit in the window for years and slowly rot to pieces/fade/get
rusty/knocked over and busted by the shop cat.
Another factor in these sales/hamfests if that these items were more
often than not perceived as "just a bunch of old radios and junk" . I
have inherited many pieces from a (living) local old-timer, who himself
inherited them from his SK brother-in-law. The fellow specified in his
will that everything went to the brother-in-law because he knew his
son-in-law would just sell it off in pieces and make a few quick $$.
I met the SK's wife this summer and the circle was completed for both of
us. She was happy that her husband's gear was being cared for in a happy
home and actually used on the air, and I got to tell her how much I
appreciated her husband's legacy, some of which will be on the air this
weekend from LCI(L) 1091.
