Oh, I don't know,some of the underground
organizations in Europe during WWII made
tubes by hand.  ALso, some of the old X and
Y crystals were not little tiny things.
LF and Broadcast crystals could be as much
as a quarter inch thick.  About holders
with three pins, some were used in switched
dual frequency arrangements.  There would
be two seperate cavities inside.
