There's a very good paper published in the Proceedings of the IRE for february 1947 which describes the various radars developed in Canada and produced by Research Enterprises Ltd, in Leaside near Toronto.
Army , Navy radars were developed for fixed installations and R.E.L expanded to 4000 employees at one point to meet demand. Initial sicentific personnel came from the National Research Council in Ottawa.
At the request of the British Government and with the arrival of the Tizard mission, magnetrons were rushed into production. The GL MkIII or Gunlaying radar was specifically developed for Great Britain AA defences .
As explained in the above reference paper, "they produced very good range data but because they used 50-70Mhz, their bearing accuracies were mediocre and the elevation data quite unreliable. " One they switched to the cavity magnetron and microwave frequencies, accuracy improved dramatically.
Research Enterprise Ltd. produced 665 GL III Cs , 665 RH 6s, 4500 Air- Surface radars, 670 SCR-602s, 155 RWG's , 1600 RFX/SCR268 , 70 RWM's IFF gear). They also produced 7000 type AYF radio altimeters, designed by RCA. Much of the early production was crucial to air defence needs.
A reprint of the IRE paper appeared in the Spring 2006 edition of the Ottawa Vintage Radio Club bulletin
