Agree.  I finally just bit the bullet and made up some 16 gage aluminum 
angles (with lightening holes, of course) that screwed to the nut plates 
in the cover of the transmitter and had nut plates on the front to 
accept the meter box thumbscrews.  Not the most aesthetically pleasing 
assemblage perhaps, but it keeps the meter box from toppling over, is 
easy to make on a small brake, doesn't require any modification of the 
original parts, and with a bit of black wrinkle paint doesn't look too 
bad.  Fabrication sketch on request.  There are certainly worse Rube 
Goldberg concepts evident in avionics history.  :-)
