If you like "gadget factor", you might also like the "accessorization
paradigm." That's the formula that expresses the relationship in the
cost of the radio -- or primary box component -- to the more @RARE@
accessories, such as speakers, canvas covers, antennas and grround
cables with carry bags, etc. It's not uncommon, even with new
merchandise. For example, the XYL will buy a dress for $200, but then
need to accessorize at a cost of a multiple of that sum. Do not attempt
to parse the logic or component values, even though the accessories
essential for that dress might seem, to the uneducated eye, generic and
(don't think of saying this) ... already in inventory.
As far as the Angry 5 is concerned -- coded :-(5 -- a serviceable
receiver, power supply and case can be obtained for $150-200. I've
bought 'em for as little as $50, even on ebay (but not lately).
However, if accompanied by, or after the accumulation of, the rest of
the pertinent accessories, the total sum will be a multiple of that amount.
Ironically though, while dual speakers for R-390(A)'s go for a lot of
dough, the Angry 5 takes an (optional) LS-166, which is fairly cheap.
(The inboard speaker provides better audio, but for the sake of
completeness ... well ...). It's all that canvas stuff, antennas, etc
-- and don't forget the spare tube kit, headphones with UG-whatever
connector, original, not copied, manuals, etc.
Then again, it's the quest for the odd pieces that's key to the game.
If they've been pre-collected for you, then you have to figure on the
doohickey-mass coefficient.
Good hunting ....
Barry
