They're that high because people will pay that much for them. They are
not all that useful for hams, unless you want an RX that you can set 
to a frequency and have it there a few months later. I have two, and
keep them set to 15.0 AM for WWV/WWVH monitoring and 11175 USB for the
USAF GHFS nets. If you don't mind a case of knob-twister's wrist that
will make your orthopod or chiropractor ecstatic, they're not terrible
for band-cruising, either.
