While it wasn't stated the article, it implies that the EPIRB
was not a factor in the rescue.

I don't know, but the Coast Guard could not talk to the vessel,
so one would assume that at least the C.G.
no longer has effective HF capability.
They gave it up for things that talk faster and FAIL faster, too.
