Yes and no. While the product is fairly complicated, the individual
steps are not really high tech. They are all essentially 1900 technology
and require far less precision than making a clock or watch. Even the
raw materials are pretty straight forward. Nothing like the technology
needed to produce intrinsic or extrinsic silicon or germanium, let alone
a junction or transistor.

quantities, at affordable
prices, in an era when manufacturing technology was far les
sophisticated that it is
