In 1946 I had a German signal generator that was somewhat
larger than the one we're discussing here, and it had a large
rotary display for freq control and band switching.  Like an
oversized R-388 or 51-J.  That was in Berlin with Army AF.
A few years ago I used a Pegelsender made by W&G.  Also
