Well, there's a small percentage of people who are of
the opinion that any mode in aircraft other than VHF voice
was totally abandoned just after the Wright Brothers and
cannot be shaken from that religion,
so I used "still" for their benefit. LF "towers"
were in use, even in the U.S., well into the 1960s,
although the FCC wouldn't license new LF installations
after the war, according to one document I have here somewhere.

Agree. "Tower" in the context I used it denotes
function, not a building. While some "towers"
were in real towers, many were in huts, lean-tos
or the back of jeeps.
