What do yah mean, "still using"? That and VHF DF was all
we had, and they weren't "towers". Mostly long wires, and
often flat-tops 80 feet high and 150 feet long. Mainly BC-191
transmitters, or T-5's for more power. Any of you
were flying in Korea in 1950 and 51? Remember the "TG"
beacon at Taegu? That beacon could be heard a long, long way
at night. ADF approaches were the way to go, and there weren't
that many four-course radio ranges in the area. Trivia: One of
my small group's projects was coordination with the Japanese
CAA on installing a network of LF beacons, (our equipment
and money), to establish civil airways throught the country. 1952.
