Some one will have to open one of those things
up before we can learn how the coax is connected
to the metal sheath. It may be capacitive, or it may
be connected at some point between the top and
the bottom, or there may be a network of some
kind. Also, the longwire antenna that tied to the top
was insulated from the sheath itself. Bear in mind
that all the VHF transmitters that used these antennas
were manually adjusted (tuned), and compensated
for any Z or "j" problems it saw in the coax. The
BC-640 even had an antenna tuning section which
was seperate, but fed by the PA section. It appears
they didn't expect everything to be right out of the
book. And, transmission lines are an extension of
the antenna, definately not the other way around.
Not to start a flap, but perhaps someone would like
to explain the "TV Rabbit Ears" in detail.
