That's the big RCA AVA-10 type crystal holder, which will also fit the AVR-20 (along with the FT-243 style). They were also used in the AVT-23 transmitter that the US Navy bought. (What use the USN made of the AVT-23 remains a mystery to me).

That's a real good point. I wonder what the crystal current is. Doubtless the FT-243 units fare better with the 6V6 MO in the AVT-112.
I don't think that the modulated oscillator design of the 6L6 in the AVT-15 can even be properly termed an electron coupled design, a MOPA in one tube, the way that designs like the 837 single tube transmitter in most of the TBX-series clearly can be.
