Hue,
During the July 2005 transmission from SAQ I was able to copy their signal in Inyokern, CA (Near China Lake). I submitted a screen shot from Spectrum Lab showing some well known nearby signals (such as NPM, NAA, and the ever-present TV horizontal sweep) and now have a QSL card! As far as I know, I am possibly the ONLY station to have ever received SAQ on the West Coast. I seem to recall another station in Colorado or Utah that received them as well that year.
The receiver was a 1 GHz laptop and Spectrum Lab. I used a shielded magnetic loop and a preamp. Conditions were absolutely perfect and were apparently a fluke. I have tried numerous other times with zero results. I will try again this Christmas.
My other VLF reception equipment includes a Dero SP-600 VLF and a Collins HF-2050. The '2050 is an exception receiver - but Spectrum Lab beat it out!

I thought VLF operations were sort of world-wide range, regardless of
season and without the propagation variations of HF ?

Ah yes - them were the good olde days. Copying NSS, NAA, NPM, and
NPG/ NLK ( Jim Creek, Arlington WA keyed by NPG SF-CA ) on
a single triode receiver, inspired by a QST article. Perfect CW,
at about 20WPM, excellent CW practice. I even had a QSL from
NPM, thanking me for my "valuable reception report", ha ha.
( i noticed when i lived in WA about 15 years ago, that a FSVM voltmeter
tuned across the VLF band, the level meter's pointer went way up when
tuned across NLK's frequency. I also "think" but not absolutely certain
that you could hear the TTY sound in the background on some phone
lines on the Olympic Peninsula, and even occasionally on the car radio,
at certain locations and at certain points on the dial. This of course after
CW went away. -Hue Miller
