There's another name from the past. Submarines of my era often had a commercial model Rycom selective voltmeter installed...not in the radio room, but in sonar as a acoustic receiver. I'll bet it will make a pretty good VLF receiver.
FWIW, our underwater telephone system, used for voice communications via sound to surface ship escort, actually used an upper sideband modulated acoustic signal whose "carrier" would be in the VLF range, had it been radio and not sound.
