Marty, i have a photo of a Marines TBX station on the sands of Roi.
Curiousity piqued me to look up Roi Namur.
At this site, interesting story:

http://www.fightingfourth.com/namur.htm

"...the two islands of Roi-Namur were hardly more than over grown sand spits.
Roi measured 1200 by 1250 yards at its widest points; Namur was 800 by 900
yards - neither island a square mile in size! An estimated 3,000 enemy troops
were there to defend them."

There were two ammo dump explosions during the proceedings- one theirs,
one ours - so the islands were quite a mess. Now Roi seems to be the
"residential, recreational, and shopping area" for the missile tracking operations
on Namur. I think it would be a bit spooky, living on top a battlefield.
