[Milsurplus] BC-650-A

Cleaning out some junk from the home of a former radio serviceman I came across a 3x5" plastic circuit diagram for the Army radio BC-650-A. They appear to be two -2 tube TRF receivers in one package with A& B frequencies. 

What were these used for? Google didn't seem to turn up very much.
