 From 1946 through 1953 the EE-8's I encountered were
mostly in a leather case.  Usually the leather was in good
shape.  You're right about the wires on the handset plug
becoming brittle over time.   For "fixed" installations, such
as Control Towers and Operations Centers, the phone
was usually removed from the cover.   TO&E outfits kept
the cover, I suppose, but I was never in one.
