That's a testament to the radio engineers of the time.
They wouldn't have issued these radios for combat use
(yes; they did) and built so many accessories for them 
over such a long time if they didn't work.  
They were easy to fix, easy to support with spares
and they worked.
It's good to see that the "it's junk" attitudes that 
were born in ignorance in 1950s magazines is finally passing.
