The cvr transcript, if I recall, had one of the crew recommend a gentle 
rate of climb, trying to squeeze every drop possible from the tanks. 
This was a dead giveaway that the crew knew how desperate their case was 
and still they failed to declare an emergency (properly).

Arrogance + bravado + stupidity == dead.
