Sometimes this JAN nomenclature was even applied to the covers for unused plugs on equipment.  The covers for unused small and medium diameter connectors of the AN/ARC-5 were, IIRC, the CW-4/ARC-5 and the CW-5/ARC-5.  (This use of CW is not to be confused with USN nomenclature like CW-49507, where the CW means the item was made by Western Electric.)

I've always thought that this was carrying the JAN-system just a little to far into micro-detail, worse even than the assignment of JAN numbers to individual sub-assemblies of a unit, such as assigning O-215/ARC-38 to the SMO sub-assembly of the RT-311/ARC-38.
