Going back to the pilot's preference for the SCR-522 over the HF ARC-5s, I seem
to remember reading somewhere that the reliability of communications improved
dramatically when the fixed tuned receivers were installed.

IMO, pilots likely have little patience when in the air and HF propagation can
be variable, so they would immediately start cranking on the remote if a reply
was not forthcoming. Trying to renet would be difficult at best.
