I had one about 16 years ago I bought from Fair Radio. Never could get the damn
thing to work, even after I spent too many +ACQAJA- putting together a portable 24v
battery array to power it. Just didn't know enough about mil-rigs at the time
to do any good, I guess. When I found out Walt Hutchens had one running, I
begged him to do an article on it till he gave up and relented. He got even
with me by pointing out (see the ER article) that it was one of the easiest rigs
to get going - I suspect there was some mysterious something wrong with mine,
which has been my luck with not-so-Fair.
I've wanted to acquire another, just to find out if Walt was right and make
another try, but they now seem to be made of expensive un-obtanium ... and don't
bother to mention oyvey, as I've had so many shipments damaged by shipping goons
and poor packers I've given up buying there. Not to mention I still can't
afford it ... sigh. At least I have a GRR-5, a raft-sinking bunch of GRC-rigs
(RT-68, etc.) ... and a trio of 'ARC-5' rigs to sell/trade:
The aluminum-finish 7-9.1mc BC-459-A is typically Ham-hacked, but not the worst
I've ever seen: octal socket on back (they dint even bother using a plug+ACE-) and
an SO-239+ADs- keyjack on lower left front+ADs- small controls are corroded? stuck+ADs-
pilot lamp where the ant. jack used to be+ADs- badly shrunk coil lens+ADs- BUT it still
has all the covers, including the ephemerous HV one+ACE- Missing a tube and the
crystal off the rear shelf ... +ACQAJA-?
The 190-550kc BC-453-B, dirty but all-original+ADs- AND, a 1.5-3mc CCT-46104 w/
5DY82AB16 dyno, parts of model ARA equip., Stromberg-Carlson, contract NXsa21024
(no date legible+ADs- may not be one) Peeling finish (big surprise there ...), but
un-touched otherwise.
Details on request. If you have trades, they absolutely, positively MUST be
plug-and-play - I have plenty of projex already+ACE- I might even trade for a
Ham-hacked pair of 7-9.1mc 'ARC' rigs, as long as they're accompanied by
plug-n-play power supplies. The tx can even have the roller coil out, as it
won't work with my antennas anyway ... folding green is preferred, but
what-have-you? Don't be shy+ADs- I'll take anything easily re-sellable, or even a
WW1 French long-bbl rifle such as the Berthier or Lebel (the one lacking in my
collection), or small revolvers (will usually be break-action) that shoot the
.38 short (AKA .38 S+ACY-W) or .32 long, or olde auto pistols for .32 auto. These
need not be 'plug-n-play', as long as they're readily re-buildable...
