Hmmmm....I never had that problem, as I recall it, and I used one as my 
only station receiver for at least 10 years. 

Even locals on SSB wouldn't drive it out of "bloop" for me.

The only gain control the RAL has is an RF gain control.

Audio runs wide open all the time.

I do remember George Nichols, W7IOJ, purposely zerobeating me and 
then yelling, "Hello, Kenny!", which would pin the DB meter.

That was back in the 1960s. He reminded me of that just the other day.
