[Milsurplus] Question about EMP

Some years ago while at Lockheed, I was at a design review where I had to
present my technology for protecting an aircraft against EMP. I had just
finished my LEMP session with the conclusion that the airplane was quite
safe if the lightning event was at least a kilometer from the airplane. I
was
about to start the NEMP session when a uniformed officer with silver oak
leaves on his collar (his name and service branch shall remain anonymous)
raised his hand. I made the mistake of acknowledging his raised hand. He
had a thoughtful look on his face and said, "Well, that's all well and good
for
lightning EMP, but what if the airplane is about a kilometer from a nuclear
detonation?"

Well, folks, the devil made me do it. I looked him square in the eye and
announced in a clear voice that all could hear, "In that case, EMP goes
to the bottom of the crew's list of things to worry about." The guy was
neither an aviator nor a techie. He was a bean counter keeping an eye on
how the government's money was being spent. Apparently it was OK with
him to spend it on time to ask and answer truly nitwit questions.

Lots of these stories in my long Lockheed career. :)

If it comes to NEMP I think the issue will be moot for those of us in
an urban setting, however the days of Mutually Assured Destruction are
over in my humble opinion. If there were a nuclear exchange, I beleve
the US would come through with minimal loss and the adversary would
cease to exist. We still maintain a formidable arsenal and no-one else
 comes close.

Your assumptions only hold for STATES that have territory to nuke. They
do NOT apply to someone who gets a nuke and brings it in to a US city in
a bale of pot. (ref to Congressional hearings years ago)

A 55 gal. drum with a good lid can hold a lot of smaller radio
 sets,probably a complete GRC-9 with gas generator.Better yet sink a
concrete septic tank and seal up the input ant output holes and voila a

storage bunker. You could even water seal the concrete box before
 putting in the ground.

A concrete box will offer little to no protection against EMP.
