I believe I had posted something about Y/U's being used - IRONICALLY - in the altimeter/firing circuit of the Little Boy A-bomb.  (That antennas was also a half-Yagi with a folded DE, using the bomb casing as the image plane. http://www.answers.com/topic/little-boy  )  I also posted that the Japanese's only deployed use for Y/Us was in two Pt-to-Pt VHF circuits between the Japanese mainland and a couple of islands during the pre-War years.  (See A Secret Story About the Yagi Antenna, written by Prof Gentei Sato of Sophia University, Tokyo, IEEE's Antennas and Propagation Magazine, June, 1991.)
