Since it's defined facing the bow (as in, from the helm), it's all
good.  Kind of like in an airplane when it's defined as looking
forward - kind of like the pilot would be under normal conditions.

'Port', 'Starboard', & 'Larboard' (the original term used for 'port')
all have historic reasons for being named as such.  I have to go on my
tricky memory as to why the port & starboard lights are as they are,
but it's related.
