That's a close distinction.  As you imply it would be very incorrect to confuse one for the other.  In addition to the directional information contained within the old A-N ranges, these also operated at high power, sometimes as great as 1000 to 1500 watts, while the NDBs usually run about 25 watts.

But...even Setchell-Carlson, most likely the manufacturer of more range receivers than anyone else [Model 512, Model 591, Model 524 (a.k.a. BC-1206-C, -CM, -CM2), etc.] refers to them all as "beacon" receivers on the receiver itself, in the associated manuals, and in their advertisements.
