Clete & Group,
99-44/100% of everyone I've ever heard talk about the Navy's use of MG-sets
either said they couldn't understand why they did (if the speaker was polite)
or said the Navy always did things the stupid Navy way (if they were poorly
educated AH's). But the situation at the beginning of WW-II was that the Navy
had ships and craft with 12 VDC, 24 VDC, 115 VDC, 230 VDC, 110 VAC, 208 VAC, 220
VAC and 440 VAC main power busses (at least) all in service. I don't know
for sure when the last DC ship was decommissioned but it was certainly after the
end of WW-II. Since some of the equipment had to be usable on all of those
ships and all of the equipment had to be usable on some of the ships, it was
both cheaper and easier to design and support an MG-set and buy an assortment of
motors and main starter relays than it was to design, build and stock a bunch
of different supplies.
