About motor-generators. On Kwajalein in '51 or '52 when we
were preparing for the H-Bomb test, USAF was installing their
HF tx and rx sites, but Navy, who had already occupied the island
since WWII already had what HF they needed. Navy gear was
different, and interesting because ours was all spin-offs of commercial
equipment, 96C's and T-4's for instance. The Navy transmitter site
was a large Quonset full of motor-generator powered transmitters.
Maybe about 15 or 20. Sticking cheese in ones ears helped. Another
thing, seems most of their transmitter tuning knobs was a 5" lever
riding in a circular guide that had adjustable stops on it. For Pretuning.
And QSY in a hurry. When I got with AT&T I learned that the
care and feeding of a motor-generator is a study of its own.
