I've seen many three hole versions and a few with the more
standard-looking 6-7 holes like an earphone.

This is what I was thinking and wondering if they actually planned it
this way. When I flew with the Collings Foundation years back in
Nine-O-Nine, I brought along an Icom HT to contact some of the guys.
Good luck! With all four radials roaring, it was impossible to make
out anything - even at full volume, held up tight to my ear.

Of course, the available options then weren't as advanced and varied
as now, so it feels like 'reading more into it' than anything. Not
that there were a lot of better options, more that this one worked in
the given conditions and the carbon buttons probably didn't get a lot
of chance to settle and crap out. Speculation, entirely.
