"I jumped into a jeep and went to the 'tower', which was no more than a tent on
a hill overlooking the airfield. [ Tontouta Airfield, inland from the coast in a
mountainous region of New Caledonia, Pacific area; undated incident, except
that it's WW2 ] When I went into the tent, I could hear Col. Caldera's voice
on the radio. The radio operator was white as a sheet, and handed me the
microphone.....
"....At that moment, lightening struck the tent that was our control tower. It
knocked out the radio and burned my hand. The radioman dove under the
table and within 30 seconds had another radio functioning. Of course, Col.
Caldera was screaming at me over the radio, because he had no guidance for
that time..."

End quote. I'm just wondering if we can narrow down what kind of radio at
the "tower" this might have been. Had to be a transceiver, wouldn't you
think, to change it that fast? It does not really say the radioman moved the
radio, just that he (apparently) hooked up another one. SCR-522 ???
Story from Militaria International, April 2003: "A Miracle in the Pacific",
about guiding down a lost B-17 in a storm, in treacherous mountain region.
